Local News in Brief : Seal Beach : 2,000 Signatures Filed on City Growth Measure
A residents’ group seeking passage of a citywide slow-growth initiative--similar to a countywide measure that has qualified for the June ballot--has submitted about 2,600 signatures to the city clerk.
To qualify the proposed Citizens’ Sensible Growth and Traffic Control Amendment and Ordinance for the city ballot, supporters needed signatures of 1,810 registered voters, or 10% of the city’s voters.
The county registrar of voters must validate petition signatures in less than the county’s 30-day limit in order for the initiative to qualify for the June ballot, Seal Beach City Clerk Joanne Yeo said. “We have to get it to the county by March 11 to consolidate something for the June primary,” she said.
Barbara Rountree, an officer of the Seal Beach Residential Homeowners Assn., which launched the city initiative drive, said the signatures were collected by about 25 people within seven weeks at area malls, and through 3,500 newsletters mailed to registered voters with petitions attached.
“We collected signatures for Orange County and at the same time for the city,” Rountree said.
