Westchester : Residents Protest Bus Yard

Share

Members of the Ladera Heights Civic Assn. have come out against plans for a Southern California Rapid Transit District bus maintenance yard in their neighborhood.

Almost all of the 400 neighbors who attended a meeting on Feb. 18 to discuss the proposed bus yard voted to oppose it, said Ronni Cooper, the association’s president.

She said leaders of the group will meet on March 17 with the developer of the bus yard to review alternative projects at the property, now the site of the 39-year-old Pacific Centinela Drive-In Theater.

The site was chosen last month as an alternative to a proposed bus yard farther west at Jefferson and Grosvenor boulevards, on land owned by produce grower Crescenciano Lopez. That proposal also ran into opposition from neighbors, and City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter pledged during her election campaign last year to find a new site.

Both locations were suggested as alternatives to the RTD’s three-acre bus yard at Sunset Avenue and Main Street in Venice, where residents have complained for years about diesel fumes and noise.
