CAMPAIGN ’88 : Tight Pack in Texas Poll
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Dukakis, Gephardt and Gore lead a tight Democratic race in Texas, while Vice President George Bush is a runaway winner among Republicans in the state, a Houston Chronicle poll showed Thursday.
Texas, the biggest single prize in the March 8 Super Tuesday, will send 183 delegates to the Democratic convention and 111 to the Republican session.
Jackson is the favorite of 19% of those surveyed, followed closely by Dukakis, with 18%, Gephardt with 15% and Gore with 12%. Illinois Sen. Paul Simon and former Colorado Sen. Gary Hart are at the back of the pack with 6% and 5%, respectively. The poll shows a large number of voters--24%--still undecided in the Democratic primary.
Bush, who lives in Houston, has the support of 60% of Republicans. Kansas Sen. Bob Dole is far behind, with 15%. Former religious broadcaster Pat Robertson is at 6% and New York Rep. Jack Kemp has 4%. The undecided portion is 14%.
The poll results are based on surveys of 294 Republican voters and 301 Democrats, with a margin of error of plus or minus 6%.
