A lawyer representing Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham asked the state Senate to dismiss the impeachment charges against him on grounds of insufficient evidence. In a dismissal motion, attorney Murray Miller said there was insufficient evidence that Mecham had committed high crimes, misdemeanors or malfeasance in office, as the impeachment resolution adopted by the House has charged. Mecham’s Senate trial is scheduled to begin Monday, but his attorneys have threatened court action seeking a delay after the Senate rejected a request to postpone the proceedings until after his criminal trial on March 22.
