Chargers Announce Ticket Price Hike

Charger season ticket holders were to receive letters in the mail today informing them of $3 per game per ticket increases for 56,000 of San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium’s 60,000 for 1988.

Most of the seats affected will be $20 seats that will now cost $23. The 2,000 press-row level seats go from $25 to $30. An unspecified number of upper-level end zone seats will go from $18 to $21. And the first four rows of field level seats will increase from $14 to $15. Extended plaza level seats (3,000) will be reduced from $20 to $15.

It is the second Charger ticket increase in five years.

The Chargers also announced their exhibition schedule. They open at home Saturday Aug. 6 against the Cowboys at 6 p.m. The next Saturday they play the Rams in Anaheim at a time to be announced. One week after that they play host to the 49ers at 6 p.m. And they conclude the exhibition season Friday Aug. 26 against the Rams at home at 7 p.m.

BASEBALL

Chris Murphy hit a two-run double in a four-run sixth inning to put UC San Diego (6-1) ahead, 8-7, and UCSD went on to defeat Christ College of Irvine, 13-7, at Irvine. Winner Rick Nowak (4-0) allowed all seven runs.

The University of San Diego (6-7) took an early 7-0 lead and held on to defeat host Point Loma Nazarene College, 10-8, in a nonconference game. USD’s James Ferguson (1-0) got the win and Mark Manor recorded his third save. USD catcher Dave Rolls hit a two-run homer in the third.

SOFTBALL

USIU defeated the University of the Pacific, 3-2, after losing to Cal Poly Pomona, 1-0, in the Arizona State University Invitational. Nora Flores pitched a six-hitter for the win over Pacific.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

United States International set a school scoring record in a 127-113 nonconference victory over Sacramento State in Golden Hall Thursday night. Russ Heicke scored 36 points to lead USIU.

The Gulls (8-18) led 65-52 at the half. Charles Redding and Steve Smith added 16 points each for USIU. Sacramento State (22-6), ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, was led by Alex Williams’ 31 points. Williams made seven three pointers and leads all divisions of the NCAA with 159 this season.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

San Diego State led 49-42 with three minutes remaining but could not hold in a 55-53 loss at Cal State Fullerton in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. game.

Jill Matyuch scored on a three-pointer with 35 seconds left to pull Cal State Fullerton (15-10, 10-6). Chana Perry led the Aztecs (19-8, 10-6) with 16 points.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Grossmont College shut out host San Diego City College, 9-0, in a Pacific Coast Conference match.

Megan Lowery, Caren Hasselo and Tracy LaCorte were winners in both singles and doubles for Grossmont (4-0, 2-0), which is ranked No. 2 in the state.
