Nobel Winner Feynman

I am deeply saddened upon hearing about the death of Dr. Feynman. I had looked forward to seeing him again. Several years ago I began walking for exercise and weight control. Each morning I trekked the streets of Altadena, venturing farther and farther from my home. It became an enjoyable experience for me as I met many friendly people along the way.

One day I met a charming and friendly man, also walking. We walked together, chatting easily and freely. I thought to myself, “What a lovely man.” Stopping in front of his home, we talked some more and I found myself impressed by his warmth and unpretentious manner. “Are you retired?” I queried. He smiled and with a gleam in his eye said, “Oh, no . . . I’m a teacher . . . at Caltech.” After that initial meeting I looked forward to seeing him again and continuing our little talks. One day as I passed his house, he stretched out his arms and gave me a warm hug. “What a lovely sight to see on such a gloomy day,” he exclaimed. I replied, “Just seeing you makes me feel good.”

Since those meetings, I learned who Dr. Feynman was. I learned about his Nobel Prize and I read his book. I followed his work on the Space Shuttle Commission with avid interest.

I didn’t continue my walks. When I did think about those walks, I always thought of Dr. Feynman. Now it is too late.

Dr. Feynman, I knew you for such a short time, yet you touched my life with your gentle spirit and outgoing care. I shall miss you. I shall never, never forget you.
