Local News in Brief : Amnesty Encouragement
A group of Latino officials who initially expressed lukewarm support for the Immigration Reform Act urged illegal aliens Friday to take advantage of the amnesty program before the May 5 deadline.
While continuing to criticize the legislation for subjecting ineligible relatives of applicants to deportation, members of the National Assn. of Latino and Appointed Officials noted that the amnesty program is a one-time-only opportunity.
Rep. Edward Roybal (D-Los Angeles), president of the organization, was joined at an East Los Angeles news conference by City Council members Richard Alatorre and Gloria Molina, Assemblywoman Lucille Roybal-Allard and state Sen. Art Torres.
Roybal said many eligible applicants have not taken advantage of the legislation because they fear they may be separated from family members who are ineligible or have had difficulty obtaining the necessary documentation.
