The New Jersey Nets reportedly are close to naming Hall of Fame center Willis Reed as their coach, replacing interim Coach Bob MacKinnon.
The Nets refused to say when they will name a new coach, although two New York newspapers reported that Reed, former New York Knicks star and now an assistant coach with the Sacramento Kings, will get the job Monday.
In a telephone interview, Reed said Saturday he would be flying to New York on a red-eye and planned to meet with Nets’ officials Sunday. “It’s not a done deal,” Reed said. “Hopefully, we’ll get it done. I’m going to pack enough clothes.”
