The World : 2 Refuseniks Reach Israel
Two Soviet Jews, Nachum Maiman, 77, a Moscow mathematician, and Lev Shapiro, 48, an electronics engineer from Leningrad, arrived in Israel after a long struggle to emigrate. Maiman had been refused an exit visa because of scientific secrets he was alleged to have possessed. He was met by his daughter, Olga, who flew to Israel from the United States. Shapiro, a refusenik for 11 years, arrived with his wife and two children. British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was among international figures who intervened on behalf of the Shapiro family.
