For the first time since World War II, Bulgarian voters were offered a choice of official candidates in elections for municipal and regional council offices. The official Bulgarian news agency BTA reported a turnout of 98.42% in the balloting, held under a new electoral law that allows for an unlimited number of candidates proposed by political parties, public bodies and work teams and registered at meetings with the voters. Previously, only one official candidate for each post was registered. The Yugoslav news agency Tanjug reported that 66,582 candidates had been nominated for the 55,426 seats at stake.
