SDSU to Play UCLA Sept. 3 in Rose Bowl to Start Season

San Diego State will open its football season Sept. 3 against UCLA in the Rose Bowl, SDSU Athletic Director Fred Miller announced Monday.

No kickoff time has been set for the game, which will be the season opener for both teams. The game originally was scheduled for Sept. 24.

“We wanted to play a nonconference game prior to our (Western Athletic Conference) opener with Air Force (Sept. 11 at San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium),” Miller said in a statement. “UCLA wanted to get a game under its belt before taking on Nebraska on Sept. 10.”

Miller also announced that the Aztecs’ home game against Brigham Young will be returned to its originally scheduled date of Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.

Miller had said in January that the game was to be moved to Nov. 26 to be more attractive to network television. But he said Monday that Nov. 5 actually would offer “better potential for a network TV appearance.”

BASEBALL

Chuck Graham’s two-run single sparked a seven-run fifth inning as the University of San Diego defeated Penn State, 11-5, Tuesday at USD.

Penn State led, 3-2, in the fifth inning, when reliever Brett Misavage (0-2) walked the first three batters he faced. Graham then singled and Mark Trafton hit a two-run double.

Mike Newby (1-2) allowed 8 hits and 5 runs in seven innings for USD (7-9).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Since the 1976-77 season, the San Diego State women’s basketball team has gone 0-29 against Cal State Long Beach. Tonight, SDSU (19-8) will attempt to break the streak when the teams meet for the second time this season in a 7:30 game in Peterson Gym.

SDSU trailed, 38-36, at halftime before losing, 96-76, at Long Beach 11 days ago.
