Lazers Beat Sting in Overtime, 7-6; Borja Leads Way

Chico Borja had two goals and three assists as the Lazers beat the Chicago Sting, 7-6, in overtime Tuesday night.

The Sting rallied in the fourth quarter to tie the game, 6-6, when Chico Moreira and Charlie Fajkus scored to offset a goal by Borja at 4:20 to send the game into overtime. It was the third extra-period game in a row for the Sting.

But Chris Whyte’s deflected a shot by Michael Collins into the net to give the Lazers the victory.

Borja scored the game’s first goal 2:15 into the first quarter, but Chicago took a 2-1 lead shortly after that on two goals by Dave MacWilliams.

Both teams then traded two goals each in the second quarter, with Thompson Usiyan and Collins scoring for Los Angeles, and Oscar Albuquerque and Manny Rojas scoring for Chicago to give the Sting a 4-3 lead at halftime.

Two consecutive goals in the third quarter by Whyte and Paul Child gave the Lazers a 5-4 lead.

The Lazers (18-18) are in third place in the Major Indoor Soccer League’s Western Division, trailing the first-place San Diego Sockers by 9 1/2 games.

The Sting (17-20) is in fourth in the Eastern Division, six games behind the Minnesota Strikers.
