Presidential aspirant Michael Dukakis’ state film commissioner said this week that Massachusetts won’t tolerate any interference from anti-Jane Fonda protesters when the actress comes to Holyoke and Chickapee in July to film MGM’s “Union Street” with Robert De Niro. Massachusetts commissioner Mary Lou Crane told Daily Variety that her organization insured full and unrestricted cooperation when the the film company arrives, despite recent resolutions passed in those towns that endorse some Vietnam veterans’ objections to Fonda’s presence. Crane acknowledged that some veterans “disapprove of (Fonda’s) activities during the Vietnam War,” but said she saw “no problem.” Crane also downplayed suggestions that the Fonda controversy might became a political hot potato for Dukakis, the current Democratic front-runner.
