CAMPAIGN ’88 : Robertson Wins Alaska
Pat Robertson easily won a straw poll in Alaska’s Republican caucuses, capturing more votes than Vice President George Bush and Kansas Sen. Bob Dole combined, party officials said Wednesday.
Robertson, the former religious broadcaster, claimed 47% of the votes cast by 2,020 precinct delegates. Bush got 24% and Dole 20%.
The preference poll was not binding, but it gave an indication of the feelings of the delegates who will attend 27 GOP district conventions March 18-26. At those meetings, 400 delegates will be chosen to attend the state convention in late April, when the state’s 19 GOP delegates will be picked for the national convention in August.
The Democratic Party’s delegate selection, similar to that of the Republican Party, is scheduled to begin in Alaska with precinct caucuses next week.
