President Reagan told reporters today he had not read the final NATO summit communique but was quickly reminded by his chief of staff that he had seen it.

Reagan made his comment during a photo session before a fireside chat with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the Belgian government guest house, Chateau du Stuyvenberg.

Asked what he thought of the NATO communique, issued after two days of meetings, he said: “Haven’t seen it yet.”

“No, we saw it last night,” White House chief of staff Howard H. Baker Jr. said.

Thatcher said she was “very satisfied,” sharply rebuking a reporter who said he heard she was not happy with the document.

“You heard wrong,” she said. “You hear right now--I’m very pleased with it; all aspects, including modernization of all weapons we’ve got here, modernization of conventional and nuclear.”
