Washington attorney Robert S. Strauss and former Transportation Secretary Drew Lewis were selected Friday as co-chairmen of a congressional commission created to find ways to balance the budget.

The selection of Strauss, a Democrat and former U.S. trade representative, and Lewis, who served in President Reagan’s Cabinet and is now chairman of the Union Pacific Corp., was made by members of the National Economic Commission as they held their first organizational meeting.

Participants at the closed-door session said no other names were put forward as possible leaders of the bipartisan commission, which is split between six Democrats and six Republicans.
