BEDROCK CHIC: The Stones are back. Not the Rolling Stones, dummy--the Flintstones! We have no idea what this means, but everywhere we’ve turned lately, we’ve heard rocksters singing the praises of TV sitcom cult heroes Fred, Wilma, Barney, Pebbles and--of course--Bam Bam. Think we’re exaggerating?

The Screaming Blue Messiahs recent single was “I Wanna Be a Flintstone,” which featured a chorus-full of “yabba-dabba-dos” and several British-accented Barney Rubble tributes. . . . The latest Squeeze album features a song called “Footsteps,” whose languid hero croons: “I rang lots of numbers and walked many miles, I watched ‘The Flintstones’ and I turned my dial”. . . . On “Cannibal,” a song on Buster Poindexter’s new album, Buster concludes the tune with a rousing burst of “Yabba dabba dos!” . . . MCA Records has a new dance-music crooner named Pebbles (whose single “Girlfriend” was a No. 1 R&B; single). . . . When John Candy wants to liven up a dreary bus trip in the middle of “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” what TV theme does he lead the passengers in singing--”The Flintstones,” of course.

Where will this Flintstone Fever end? Who knows--but one recipient of all this hoopla may be an upcoming live-action Flintstones film project, tentatively due for the summer of 1989, which currently boasts as its co-stars, Jim Belushi (as Fred) and Rick Moranis (as Barney).
