Anti-apartheid activists in South Africa destroyed Shell gas station pumps in at least 20 Dutch towns before dawn on Monday in a protest against Royal Dutch Shell’s refusal to pull out of the country.

A central police spokesman said that about 20 towns reported damage to at least 26 gas stations. The vandals cut gasoline hoses, wrecked equipment and painted signs reading “Shell Blood” and “Shell Supports Apartheid” at the stations.

An anonymous letter sent to Reuters in Amsterdam said the action was intended to put economic pressure on the Anglo-Dutch oil company to divest its interests in South Africa and hinted that similar protests could occur in the future.
