Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor underwent an appendectomy Monday night at Bethesda Naval Hospital and is “doing exceedingly well,” a court spokeswoman said today.

Court spokeswoman Toni House said that the surgery on the 57-year-old justice, while unexpected, was not an emergency and that the appendix had not burst.

O’Connor, who joined the court in 1981, was on the bench Monday morning when the court issued opinions and orders and became ill around mid-afternoon, House said. She was operated on at about 8 p.m.

House did not know how long O’Connor would be hospitalized but said it is expected to be a “minimal amount of time.”

The court is on a two-week recess and is not due to return until March 21.
