Former Interior Secretary William P. Clark was hospitalized after erratic winds flipped his plane as he prepared to take off from his private airstrip, his wife said Tuesday.

“He had a little mishap with his small plane,” Joan Clark said. “It isn’t serious. He will be out in a day or so.”

Clark was taken to Twin Cities Hospital in San Luis Obispo for observation after Monday’s accident. The hospital referred all calls to the family business, the Clark Co., which is involved in real estate and other ventures.

Clark, 56, was alone at the controls of his Super Cub aircraft when winds jarred the plane as he was taking off on an airstrip at the family ranch, 160 miles northwest of Los Angeles near state Highway 41, Mrs. Clark said.

The plane overturned and did not become airborne, she said.
