Frankfurt Ballet to Dance in L.A.

Share

The Dance Gallery will bring the Frankfurt Ballet to Los Angeles in the summer of 1989 as part of a nine-city North American tour, Gallery and tour officials Bella Lewitzky and Darlene Neel announced Monday. Repertory, dates and location are as yet unannounced.

The 50-member Frankfurt company has danced in New York but nowhere else in America. However the work of its artistic director, 38-year-old William Forsythe of New York, is familiar to local audiences from performances by the Joffrey Ballet of his “Love Songs” and “Square Deal.”

Most recently, Forsythe’s “Steptext” was danced by the Lyon Opera Ballet as part of the 1987 Los Angeles Festival.

Lewitzky (artistic director of the Dance Gallery, a facility scheduled to be built in 1990 at 4th and Grand downtown) and Neel (associate artistic director of the International Performing Network, the organizer of the Frankfurt Ballet tour) previously produced the dance component of the Olympic Arts Festival in 1984.
