The owner of the Albany Knickerbocker News announced plans to combine the paper, an afternoon daily in New York with declining circulation, with the larger morning Times Union. The Knickerbocker News will be discontinued on April 16, said executives of Capital Newspapers, which operates both papers. The company is a division of the Hearst Newspapers Group. Company officials said personnel will be reduced but said they hoped to keep layoffs down through attrition and voluntary measures.
