Local News in Brief : Slaughterhouse Plan Rejected

Share

In the face of pressure from residents, the Los Angeles Planning Commission has unanimously overruled its staff and voted down a proposal to build a slaughterhouse in an industrial section of east Wilmington.

According to a report by the city planning staff, the proposal was submitted by Marinao Bacolores, who planned to slaughter meat at 1022 MacDonough Ave. and deliver it directly to customers on a daily basis.

“He will not deliver to stores or sell wholesale because that would involve meeting federal standards, including refrigeration and storage-facility standards, which he is unable to meet at the present time,” the report said.

Local homeowners groups contended that the slaughterhouse would be a health hazard and would not conform to a new community plan scheduled for release shortly, said Simie Seaman, president of the Banning Park Neighborhood Assn. Seaman said her group received about 90 post cards and letters opposing the plan.
