Gridlock
A Times headline announced “42 Billion Needed to Prevent Future Gridlock” (Metro, Feb. 3). Wouldn’t it be cheaper to pay people to move away? What about a system of financial rewards to encourage commuters to use public transportation and/or work close to home? After all, people seem more greed oriented than altruistic at this point--more concerned with dollars and cents than the nation’s or community’s overall welfare--so why not guide people into their own best interests by using the proverbial monetary carrot?
It’s too bad that Los Angeles public transportation is hampered by a political process (Los Angeles County Transportation Commission) that hogties the engineers and planners who are experts in mass transit.
