Rep. Richard A. Gephardt of Missouri said Thursday he has to win Michigan’s March 26 caucuses to stay in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“If we don’t do well here, obviously we aren’t going to be able to continue in this race,” he said in Lansing, Mich.

Before about 500 people at the State Capitol, Gephardt said he plans to spend a lot of time in Michigan in the next two weeks to explain his “vision of the future” to state Democrats.

Gephardt said he would move his family into the state and make his presence felt on a day-to-day basis. “We’re going to win Michigan and I’m going to bring my family in to do it,” he said. “When I get my message out, we’ve proved we can win.”
