Local News in Brief : Building Vote Put Off

Share

Responding to jeers and shouts from more than 75 Venice residents and business people, the Los Angeles City Council voted Friday to wait two weeks to consider a controversial ordinance that would place temporary restrictions on building in the congested beachfront community.

Venice-area Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, who proposed the restrictions, agreed to the delay after she was shouted down by the audience, many of whom represented real estate and development interests critical of the restrictions. The residents said they wanted more time to review the latest changes in the proposed ordinance, which has been revised several times.

Galanter, visibly angry at the rowdy reception she received, accused her critics of being unwilling to tackle Venice’s problems. The restrictions are intended to place a cap on building for one year while the city drafts permanent requirements for such things as building heights, density and parking.

“Since nobody seems to want to deal with Venice’s problems today, it is perfectly agreeable to me that they continue this matter,” Galanter said.
