Pop star Andy Gibb died of natural causes--an inflammation of the heart probably caused by a virus--and not from a drug overdose or alcohol abuse, a hospital announced Friday.

Gibb died at Oxford’s John Ratcliffe Hospital on Thursday, five days after his 30th birthday. He entered the hospital Monday complaining of stomach pains.

Gibb’s history of drug abuse led to reports in the British press that he had died of an overdose, but the hospital announced its post-mortem showed Gibb “died from natural causes.”

In 1985, Gibb sought help for his drug problem by entering the Betty Ford Clinic in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
