Larry Farmer, who was at UCLA for 15 years as a player and coach, was fired Friday as coach of the Weber State College basketball team in Ogden, Utah.

Thursday, the Wildcats lost a 58-57 quarterfinal game to Idaho State and were eliminated from the Big Sky Conference playoffs, finishing with a 9-21 record. They were 7-22 last season.

Athletic Director Gary Crompton said that a search for a replacement would begin immediately. Farmer, who has a year remaining on his three-year contract, will be assigned to other administrative duties at the school.

Farmer’s only losing seasons in 16 years of coaching were at Weber State. He served as assistant coach at UCLA from 1973 to 1981, when he became head coach.

During the next three seasons, UCLA was 61-23 under Farmer’s tutelage.
