A lawyer for Arizona Gov. Evan Mecham charged that the state police chief, a key witness against Mecham in his impeachment trial, had two defense witnesses arrested and tried to intimidate two others. Fred Craft said the U.S. Justice Department rebuffed his requests for an investigation of the prosecution witness, state Department of Public Safety Director Ralph T. Milstead. He has testified before a Senate court of impeachment that Mecham ordered him last Nov. 15 not to cooperate with an attorney general’s investigation into an alleged death threat by a Mecham aide against another aide. Craft’s charges came at a news conference after defense witness Terri Fields was arrested and charged with failing to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings as ordered by a court. Craft said another witness, Christina Johnston, was arrested after she and her husband gave him a deposition last month critical of Milstead.
