Federal Aviation Administration Administrator T. Allan McArtor told the Senate Commerce Committee that he expects fewer airline delays this summer and promised that safety will not be compromised. “I’m pleased to report that total system delays dropped 14.8% last year despite record volume, and monthly delays have been decreasing significantly since last July,” McArtor told the committee. “I’m confident that several improvements will result in smoother, more efficient air travel this summer,” he added. Delays were especially bad at most major airports last summer. McArtor said the FAA has changed its air traffic control procedures and improved its computers that track flights, while airlines made their schedules more realistic and rescheduled some flights to reduce delays.
