President Reagan paid a surprise visit to an Irish pub in this Washington suburb today, hoisting a pint of beer in honor of the wearing of the green--and picking up the tab.

Reagan munched on corned beef and cabbage at Ireland’s Own with conservative columnist James J. Kilpatrick under the watchful eyes of dozens of loud, singing, St. Patrick’s Day customers.

The President, a moderate drinker, left most of the beer in his glass.

Sporting a gray suit and a blue tie with green shamrocks, Reagan was welcomed by pub owner Pat Troy as he stepped out of his limousine and, accompanied by Kilpatrick, made his way to a table next to a three-man band belting out Irish folk songs.

At the end of his stay, Reagan, who like most Presidents is seldom seen handling money, reached into his pocket for some currency and paid the check.
