Local News in Brief : Monitoring of Discharge Stops

Share

The Los Angeles Bureau of Sanitation has stopped monitoring sewer discharges from a Harbor Gateway furniture manufacturing company that had been dumping illegal amounts of hazardous materials into city sewers.

The Los Angeles Board of Public Works approved the move on Wednesday after sanitation officials reported that Virco Manufacturing Corp., 15134 S. Vermont Ave., had “demonstrated the ability to provide long-term compliance with city discharge standards.”

In January, the board revoked one of Virco’s two industrial-waste discharge permits after inspectors detected dozens of violations involving the illegal discharge of acid, nickel and a cancer-causing form of chromium. Without the permit, the company has been forced to stop its plating operations.

The board also ordered the Bureau of Sanitation to monitor discharges allowed under the company’s second permit, which covers painting and other non-plating operations. In recommending the end of special monitoring, sanitation officials said they detected no violations during the past eight weeks.
