Local News in Brief : Awards to 3 Researchers

A USC cancer expert and two other researchers have been awarded $35,000 each for “encouraging and stimulating medical and scientific research” by the Robert J. and Claire Pasarow Foundation, a new organization founded by two San Pedro residents.
USC School of Medicine researcher Peter Vogt is credited with discovering oncogenes, considered possible causes of cancer.
Also honored were Dr. Burton E. Sobel of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis for his work in developing the drug t-PA, designed to dissolve blood clots that lead to heart attacks, and Nancy S. Wexler of Columbia University’s New York State Psychiatric Institute for her work in pursuing a cure for Huntington’s Disease.
The awards will be presented at a dinner March 24 in Los Angeles. The foundation named for Robert Pasarow, the founder and former president of CHB Foods Inc., and his wife also has established medical facilities at USC and Stanford University.
