Police in Brazil on Friday arrested four men and recovered nearly all of the $8 million stolen last month from a Brink’s international shipment en route from New York to Argentina.

It was one the largest robberies in the history of the Brink’s company.

The money was recovered by narcotics agents working for Rio de Janeiro’s Specialized Police Department. Police did not say exactly how much of the $8 million was recovered.

The money was part of a $52-million shipment from the Federal Reserve Board in New York to the Central Bank of Argentina, said Marven Moss, a spokesman for Brink’s Inc., based in Darien, Conn.

The four men arrested were all Brazilian employees of a private baggage-handling firm at Rio’s international airport, where the Brink’s shipment changed planes, police said. A Brink’s spokesman in New York said four other suspects are sought in the case.

The $8 million disappeared last month when two of the 13 canvas sacks containing the $52 million did not make it on the flight bound for Argentina.
