OBITUARIES : Lloyd Burke, U.S. Judge for 30 Years, Dies
Lloyd H. Burke, a U.S. district judge for 30 years and the most senior on the Northern California bench, died Tuesday in an Oakland hospital from complications of pneumonia. He was 71.
Burke was named to the federal bench by President Dwight D. Eisenhower after a term as U.S. attorney in San Francisco.
His death does not open a new vacancy on the 17-judge court.
Burke was certified disabled in 1980 due to hypertension, opening a vacancy on the court that was filled by the appointment of U.S. District Judge Marilyn Hall Patel.
Burke took a temporary judgeship and a reduced workload in 1980.
