Los Angeles Boy Scouts have named Capt. Robert McVey, commander of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division, as 1988 Harbor District Citizen of the Year.
In announcing the award, which is given by the Los Angeles Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the scouts praised McVey--who has been a coordinator for the Explorer Scout program since 1975--for becoming involved in 23 community groups throughout the harbor area.
“Since he came to the harbor area in 1979, he has become a prominent figure in its social and civic life, as well as its law enforcement activity,” said Mike Weitzman, who is co-chairing an April 30 fund-raising dinner in McVey’s honor.
As Harbor Division commander, McVey has responsibility for all police activities in the 26-square-mile district that includes Wilmington, San Pedro and Harbor City.
