INS and Alien Amnesty Effort
In his letter (Feb. 21), Harold Ezell, regional commissioner of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service, suggests that he is hurt that Los Amigos of Orange County and other human-rights organizations have asked for his resignation. But let’s look at the record.
According to Ezell’s own figures, just a third of those immigrants eligible have registered for amnesty. If Ezell’s original estimates of the undocumented population are correct, he has therefore failed to reach the vast majority of those eligible for amnesty.
If he and other INS officials exaggerated the number of undocumented immigrants in the country in order to get repressive, employer-sanction features into the Immigration Act, then he and his colleagues are guilty of malfeasance.
Is it unreasonable to ask for the resignation of an official guilty of either incompetence or malfeasance? Or should we extend to him the mercy he is unwilling to provide to the families he breaks up in the name of doing his job?
