U.S. special envoy Philip C. Habib briefed Egyptian Foreign Minister Esmat Abdel Meguid on Saturday about the progress of Washington’s Middle East peace initiative.

After their one-hour meeting, Meguid repeated Egypt’s view that the U.S. proposal was encouraging.

“Our policy in Egypt, as it has been, is to encourage the United States in the peace process because we all in this region are in need of peace,” he said.

Habib, who will also visit Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Morocco, is scheduled to meet with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak today, Foreign Ministry sources said.

He was sent to the region after a visit to Washington by Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, who said he was still firmly opposed to a proposed international conference on the Mideast situation.
