Jim Martin of Penn State beat top-seeded Brad Penrith of Iowa, 5-4, in the 126-pound championship match at Ames, Iowa, to end the Hawkeyes’ title hopes and hand Arizona State its first NCAA wrestling championship.
The Sun Devils scored 93 points to 81 1/2 for the Hawkeyes. Iowa State was third with 79 3/4, followed by Oklahoma State with 76 3/4 and Penn State with 67 1/2.
Arizona State’s victory was the first for a non-Iowa team since 1974.
