The Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave the green light today to restart California’s Rancho Seco nuclear plant, which has been shut down since a cool-down accident in December, 1985.

In a 5-0 vote, the commissioners agreed with the plant operator that $400 million in repairs has effectively addressed safety problems at the plant, located 25 miles southeast of downtown Sacramento. However, the commissioners said restart will not be allowed until repairs are completed on the plant’s backup diesel generator. One California anti-nuclear group sought to speak before the NRC but was denied permission.
