Local News in Brief : Fullerton : City Posting Weed Abatement Notices

Share

The city has started its annual weed abatement program, and city firefighters have begun posting abatement notices on lots sprouting excessive numbers of weeds.

City officials said that property owners have until May 2 to clean weeds from their lots. If they don’t, the city will do it and charge them for the work plus a 30% administrative fee, Fullerton Fire Marshal Marc Martin said.

The program is designed to eliminate the fire hazards created by weeds, which become dry and extremely combustible in the summer, Martin said.

“If they turn brown and they meet certain standards, then they qualify as a bona fide fire hazard,” he said.

Property owners billed for weed removal will have until July 5 to either pay the charges or appeal it to the City Council. If the council rejects their appeal, the county assessor will add the whole amount to their property tax bill.

Anyone seeking information is asked to call the Fire Prevention Bureau of the Fullerton Fire Department at (714) 738-6500.
