Local News in Brief : New Sheriff’s Station
Plans for a new sheriff’s station to serve a 100-square-mile area of western Los Angeles Country received a preliminary go-ahead Wednesday from the county Regional Planning Commission.
The commission tentatively approved a conditional use permit for a $10.2-million state-of-the-art sheriff’s station to be built on a 6.1-acre site in unincorporated county territory off the Ventura Freeway east of Agoura Hills.
Officers working out of the station would police the Las Virgenes area, including Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills and Westlake Village, which contract with the Sheriff’s Department for services, as well as unincorporated county areas such as Calabasas.
The area currently is served by the sheriff’s station at Malibu, which is 10 to 30 miles away over curving roads through the Santa Monica Mountains.
Officials hope the complex, which will include a 30,000-square-foot main building with space for more than 40 prisoners, will be open by January, 1990.
