Local News in Brief : Laguna Beach : Police Dog Sniffs Out Bank Robbery Suspect

Share

A Newport Beach police dog aided in the arrest early Wednesday of a 21-year-old suspect in the burglary of a local bank, authorities said.

Laguna Beach police requested Newport Beach’s special canine unit after Terrence Michael Arnold of Laguna Beach refused to surrender to authorities at the bank, Laguna Beach Police spokeswoman Sharon Shryne said. Laguna Beach does not have its own police dog.

Police were alerted to the First Interstate Bank in the 200 block of Ocean Avenue at 1:49 a.m., when a silent alarm went off, apparently tripped when the suspect entered the building through a second-floor window, Shryne said.

The suspect was not armed when he was discovered by the dog hiding under a stairwell in the bank, she said. Arnold was taken into custody about 3 a.m., and coins believed taken from one of the bank’s cash drawers were recovered.

Arnold was booked on suspicion of burglary, and was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail in the city jail.
