Party Raises $70,000 to Aid Nofziger
A cocktail party for former White House aide Lyn Nofziger, who was convicted last month of illegal lobbying, raised $70,000 to help pay his legal bills, his accountant said Wednesday.
About 400 people, including three Cabinet officers, attended the party Tuesday night at the Mayflower Hotel, and Nofziger “was overwhelmed at the response,” accountant David Williams said.
The $70,000 raised will be used to help Nofziger pay for more than $1 million in legal fees accummulated during his trial and the preceding investigation, Williams said. Nofziger’s legal defense fund already had about $200,000.
Administration officials at the party included Education Secretary William J. Bennett, Labor Secretary Ann Dore McLaughlin and Interior Secretary Donald P. Hodel.
A federal jury on Feb. 11 convicted Nofziger, President Reagan’s political director in 1981, of three counts of illegal lobbying for the scandal-plagued Wedtech Corp. and two other firms. His sentencing is set for April 11.
