A group of large-volume mailers filed suit to delay an April 3 hike in postage rates. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, seeks to prevent the Postal Service from raising the rates for first-class mail and other categories of mail before June 4. The suit came one day after the Postal Board of Governors decided to approve a series of rate hikes, ranging from a 13.6% increase in first-class mail to a 25% rise in bulk mail. The American Bankers Assn. and nine other large-volume mailers who joined in the suit called the board’s action an unlawful attempt to “create a windfall in revenue for itself.” The banking industry estimates it will lose $400,000 a day because of the postage rate increase.
