Chevron said it hopes to add more than 1,500 employees to its work force this year. The energy giant, which has cut its payroll to 51,500 at the end of 1987 from 79,000 at the time of its purchase of Gulf in 1984, attributed the planned increase to past hiring freezes and increased exploration and production activities. More than 300 of the new jobs will be in the San Francisco Bay Area, where Chevron is headquartered, but a spokesman was unable to say whether any new jobs would be in the Southland.
