The Colleges : College Roundup : Chapman Men’s Tennis Team Wins Easily

Chapman, the top-ranked NCAA Division II men’s tennis team, swept the singles, 6-0, to defeat the University of Washington in the opening round of the UC Irvine/Marriott tennis tournament Thursday at the Mesa Verde Country Club in Irvine.

Chapman (13-5) was led to its eighth straight victory by its No. 1 singles player, Miles Walker. Walker, tied for 32nd in singles rankings, improved his record to 24-6, beating Washington’s Ian Schroder, 6-1, 6-2. The victory was Walker’s 10th in a row and his 11th over a Division I opponent this season.

Washington is 7-4.

Today at 1 p.m., Chapman will play sixth-ranked UC Irvine, which had a first-round bye, in a quarterfinal at UC Irvine. The last time the teams met was in 1983.

In other first-round matches:

Nebraska defeated Harvard, 5-4; Minnesota defeated Wichita State, 5-4; 21st-ranked Duke defeated Yale, 6-0; Cal Poly San Luis Obispo defeated Weber State, 7-2; Utah State defeated Dartmouth, 5-4, and Mississippi defeated Fresno State, 6-3.

In nonconference tennis matches:

Loyola Marymount 8, Christ College Irvine 1--The No. 2 doubles team of Glen Wagner and Jon Endicott beat Mike Robison and Frank Yi, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, and gave Christ College Irvine its only victory. Christ College Irvine is 5-10.

In women’s nonconference tennis:

Cal State Fullerton 5, Nebraska Lincoln 4--The match was tied, 4-4, and the No. 3 doubles teams had each won one set when darkness halted play at Cal State Fullerton. The players then moved to Anaheim Tennis Center to complete the final doubles set. Fullerton’s team of Jennifer Aafedt and Caroline Sporer was down, 5-2, in games at double match point but rallied to win that game and the next four for a 6-3, 6-7, 7-4 victory for Cal State Fullerton (12-7).
