Mike Bullard’s power-play goal 2:36 into the game triggered a three-goal first period as the Calgary Flames moved back into first place in the overall NHL standings by routing the Toronto Maple Leafs, 7-1, Thursday night at Calgary, Canada.

Bullard’s long shot hit the inside of the goal post at a severe angle and came straight out into the crease. The red light came on, but rookie Joe Nieuwendyk batted the puck over the goal line and was originally credited with the goal. After the game, the goal was credited to Bullard, his 46th of the season.

New York Rangers 6, Edmonton 1--U.S. Olympian Brian Leetch scored his first NHL goal and assisted on another in a five-goal first period as the Rangers held Wayne Gretzky scoreless and beat the Oilers in New York.

Referee Dave Newell was hurt when he fell awkwardly to the ice while jumping to avoid a clearing pass by Edmonton goaltender Grant Fuhr early in the first period. Newell had to be carried off on a stretcher and taken to a hospital, where he was “conscious but feeling weak,” a Ranger spokesman said.

New Jersey 8, St. Louis 2--John MacLean, Joe Cirella and Aaron Broten each scored twice, including one on Broten’s penalty shot, to lead the Devils over the Blues at St. Louis.

New Jersey kept its slim Patrick Division playoff hopes alive with its fifth victory in seven games.

Hartford 3, Detroit 2--Stewart Gavin scored his second goal of the game with 9:26 remaining to break a 2-2 tie and give the Whalers a victory over the Red Wings at Detroit.

Hartford moved three points ahead of idle Quebec in the battle for the final playoff spot in the Adams Division.

Boston 4, Winnipeg 3--Ray Bourque’s goal 52 seconds into overtime gave the Bruins the victory at Boston and extended the Jets’ losing streak to seven games.
