The Roman Catholic archbishop of San Francisco, on leave of absence since last November for exhaustion and stress, will resume his post next month, a church spokesman said.

Archbishop John R. Quinn, 58, was in Rome after undergoing treatment in Hartford, Conn. A medical examination revealed that he has a benign tumor in an artery behind his ear and will undergo surgery to remove it next month at Stanford Medical Center. The condition is not considered life-threatening.

Quinn had taken a sabbatical leave from his duties as head of the San Francisco Archdiocese, citing exhaustion and stress stemming from church problems. He said he now feels recovered from the exhaustion and ready to resume his duties, according to a spokesman for the archdiocese.

The archbishop had hosted Pope John Paul II’s visit to San Francisco two months before taking his leave.
