A decision by the International Rugby Board to allow its members to re-open sporting links with South Africa could spark a widespread boycott of this summer’s Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, according to African sports officials and anti-apartheid activists.
At a meeting in London, the board lifted a ban on players intending to play in South Africa, and sanctioned a tour of South Africa this summer.
According to African sports officials quoted in the London-based Mail newspaper, the IRB’s action could lead to a major boycott by black African countries on the same lines as the one that hit the 1976 Olympics at Montreal.
